British artist Frederick Whymper was a member of the Russian-American Telegraph Expedition of 1865-66. Their goal was to connect a telegraph line from the Unites States with Europe by installing a telegraph line from through Alaska and Russia. Whymper joined the Expedition in Vancouver, British Columbia. He recorded their experiences at Sitka, St. Michael, Petropavlovsk, Anadyr River, and Nulato on the Yukon.

Their goal was to connect a telegraph line from the Unites States with Europe by installing a telegraph line from through Alaska and Russia. Whymper joined the Expedition in Vancouver, British Columbia. He recorded their experiences at Sitka, St. Michael, Petropavlovsk, Anadyr River, and Nulato on the Yukon. The narrative captures a far flung adventure with several voyages in the North Pacific, activities in Kamchatka, visiting the eastern Siberia, Norton Sound traveling via dog sled to the Yukon River. Detailed information about Russian/ Alaskan Territory before the United States purchase in 1867.  The last three chapters describe San Francisco and travels in California.

     

    Harper & Brothers, New York, 1869, First American Edition, 335 pages plus 2 pages of advertisements. 36 illustrations in text and full page plates (tissue guards present), mainly sketched on location, large folding map present with one professional repair. Brick brown publisher’s cloth with bright gilt vignette of dog sled and men loading the sled, gilt title to spine with small chipping to head, boards in blind  boarders.  No previous owner bookplate or writing.
