  • Scarce Hawaiian Hymnal, First Edition Printed in Honolulu

Published in 1902 by the Hawaiian Evangelical Association, this collection of 298 hymns was compiled by Theodore Richards and Ella H. Paris. They carefully compiled both “Old Hymns” as well as “Hew Hymns” that were currently being sung by younger worshippers while preserving hymns that helped transform the Sacred Word. In Theodore Richards’ preface, he mentions that they asked for copyright permission from publishers and it was almost universally given. He also acknowledges ‘Father’ Lyons whose “Himeni Hawaii” and Hoku Ao Nani” have enriched and helped to establish the Hawaiian language with an influence second only perhaps to the Sacred Word.  Mr. Joseph Kalania prepared and translated many of the songs that feature male choruses.
