Voyage of the H.M.S. Blonde to the Sandwich Islands,

                                     in the Years 1824-1825

A Voyage of Compassion Returning Kamehameha II and his Wife Back to the Sandwich Islands to be Mourned and Buried

Lord Byron, cousin of the poet and successor to his title, was commissioned to return the remains of King Kamehameha II and his wife after  they died in London from measles during a state visit to England. The Voyage was compiled from “the various journals and notes made by some of the officers and other gentlemen that accompanied Lord Byron on this interesting voyage to the Sandwich Islands.” The information was collected by Richard Bloxam, the ship’s chaplain and edited by Maria Graham. It contains important information on the inhabitants and natural history of the islands with beautifully engraved portraits and scenes of Hawaiian life.

The folding chart ‘Track of H.M.S. Blonde, to the Sandwich Islands and Home Again’ depicts the route from London, England to Owhyee returning on a completely different route. The folding frontispiece ‘Great Volcano of Peli, at Hawaii’ engraved from a drawing taken on the spot by Robert Dampier shows three explorers looking over the edge into a panorama of the cauldron with smoke rising from the volcanic cones.
